About Zapps Thermal Imaging

Our Experience

With over 40 years experience in the electrical industry, Zapps Thermal Imaging can provide expert inspections of your electrical switchboards, to be used for insurance compliance reports and also for preventative maintenance. Our inspections include temperature data and images to ensure thorough reporting. Servicing Mildura, Robinvale and surrounding areas.

What is Thermal Imaging

In simple words, thermal imaging is taking a picture using heat instead of light. While normal cameras use light to show what things look like, thermal cameras (or infrared cameras) detect the invisible heat radiation emitted by all objects. This heat data is turned into a picture where different colors represent different temperatures, often called a "heat map".

  • Sees in Total Darkness: Because it senses heat rather than light, thermal imaging works perfectly in complete darkness, or through smoke, fog, and dust.
  • Non-Contact Sensing: It allows you to measure the temperature of objects from a distance without touching them.

Best time for Thermal Imaging reports.

Thermal imaging is most effective when equipment is under load because active, functioning systems produce distinct heat patterns, whereas idle equipment does not display the thermal signatures needed to identify faults. When components are under stress (load), any defects—such as loose connections, resistance, or friction—are amplified, causing them to generate excess heat that immediately stands out as a hotspot in a thermal image. Why Thermal Imaging is Best Under Load:

  • Amplification of Faults: Electrical resistance or mechanical friction, which may be invisible when a machine is off, becomes prominent when the machine is operating at normal or, preferably, peak load.
  • Safety & Efficiency: Non-contact thermal imaging allows inspectors to scan live, energized electrical panels or rotating mechanical equipment from a safe distance, removing the need for time-consuming shutdowns.
  • Immediate Identification: Overloaded, loose, or broken components appear as hot spots against the cooler background, allowing for instant detection of potential issues before they cause total failure.
  • Real-Time Diagnostics: Modern cameras allow operators to watch the temperature rise on a circuit or machine in real-time, helping to distinguish between normal operational heat and genuine faults.

Key Application Areas:

  • Electrical Systems: Thermal cameras quickly locate hotspots on loose connections, faulty fuses, and overloaded circuits within electrical panels.
  • Mechanical Equipment: Identifies bearing wear, misalignment, or lack of lubrication in motors and conveyors.
  • HVAC & Infrastructure: Detects leaks in ducts, inadequate insulation, or faulty components in cooling systems.
